New App Store section spotlights ‘Best of April’ iOS picks

Apple has launched a new section of its iOS App Store, offering a roundup of the past month’s best mobile apps as selected by an Apple editorial team.

The “Best of April” selection is split into two categories: “Great Games” and “Amazing Apps.” These include titles such as Monument Valley, Fantastical for iPad, Duolingo, and Hitman GO.

Apple also selects its “Best App & Game” of the month for both iPad and iPhone — with April’s iPad selection being Blizzard’s Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft and Comedy Central, while Leo’s Fortune and NYT Now score the first place prize on the iPhone.

While it’s not yet known whether this will become a regular feature of the App Store (I would suspect that it will), it does follow on from recent news that Apple and Google are competing for exclusivity rights for the top blockbuster mobile games games. Sources have claimed that while Apple isn’t willing to put money on the table to entice developers to favor iOS, it has shown itself willing to offer premium placement to certain apps in exchange for a period of exclusivity. This marketing and promotion can help increase downloads by up to ten times.

Whatever the reason, it’s great to see the offbeat likes of Monument Valley (see our behind-the-scenes feature here) continue to get the exposure they deserve.
