Slingshot-wielding David faces a colossal and difficult task

David is a brilliant and challenging game about a little square facing off against some giant, cheap-as-hell foes with nothing but a minimalist game version of a slingshot.

You can see what they’re going for here, but it’s more than just David and Goliath; this plucky little game reminded me a lot of Shadow of the Colossus, one of my favorite-ever PlayStation 2 games. It was also about a little guy killing giant things, but unlike that title, which is ambiguous about whether or not you should be destroying these beasts, David is pretty confident that these geometric a-holes gotta die.

And killing them will not be at all easy.

The monsters are all different; this one is a sea monster that attacks you like at the end of the terrible Richard Harris/Bo Derek film Orca.

The controls aren’t complicated; you have buttons to move back and forth and jump. You can switch to tilt controls if you prefer, and you can jump as many times as you want, meaning that David can basically fly. Which is great.

You fire by holding your finger on David until his weapon is ready. Then you drag to aim and release. You know, like a slingshot.

David can basically fly. Which is great.

You have eight foes to vanquish and two difficulties on each, but you can’t fight the final boss until you’ve taken out all of the previous enemies on the hardest difficulty. And that’s going to take a while because even the “Okay” difficulty is incredibly hard.

But if that’s your kind of thing, this game will make you very happy.

The Good: Simple controls and very much like Shadow of the Colossus, which makes any game instantly good in my book.
The Bad: Very challenging, and I’m pretty sure one of the bosses is unbeatable. Or I’m really bad at it.
The Verdict: It’s not for casual players, but teh hardcorez will be happy with their repeated failure.
