Apple has been releasing its weekly top games charts as of late, and they make interesting reading.
The latest list — published Tuesday afternoon — shows the cumulative iOS game downloads for the week running April 7 to April 13.
Although the list doesn’t show too much in terms of shakeups, it does feature at least one fascinating ascension: the rise of A Dark Room to the top of the Paid iPhone Games list.
While most people could have guessed that the in-built fanbase of a show like Family Guy, combined with the marketing heft of FOX, would score the new Family Guy: The Quest for Stuff a place on the list, the rapid climb of the indie A Dark Room is another timely reminder of how the top levels of the App Store aren’t simply about marketing muscle and Flappy Bird clones.
“I never in my wildest dreams thought that A Dark Room would make it to the top spot in the App Store,” developer Amir Rajan tells Cult of Mac. “It boggles my mind. I must admit [that] I’ve lost a bit of sleep over it. I read every review that comes in. It makes me smile every time I see kind words spoken about the game — even the critical reviews.”
