Medium, the publishing platform from Twitter co-founder Ev Williams, has finally released its official iPhone app. As you would expect from a site that prides itself on clean, minimalistic aesthetics, the app is quite nice.

It is also incredibly limited.

There are no editing or posting options for actually sharing content on Medium. The app is solely for reading, at least for now.

“When we started working on this six months ago, we debated a lot about the purpose of the app,” said Ev Williams in an announcement post on Medium. “Was it just for reading? Should you write on it? If just for reading, what would be better about it than just using the mobile web?”

Williams goes on to say that the “details” in the app lead to the decision to leave out posting. Maybe the app will be updated with the ability to post in the future, or maybe Medium will release a standalone app dedicated to content creation. For now, it’s all about reading.

When you first open the app, you have to login with your Twitter. Stories are automatically shown to you based on who you follow and collections you follow on Medium. The interface is driven by swipes and is fairly intuitive to use.

Medium is available for free now in the App Store.
