Ever since the first Angry Bird flapped its wings back in 2009, Rovio has been only too happy to churn out sequel after sequel with slight variations on flinging birds with slingshots, but for its next act the video game studio is introducing a turn-based roleplaying game for the Angry Birds world.

Angry Birds Epic will soft launch this week in Canada and Australia says Kotaku, with a turn-based combat system and an extensive crafting feature that allows players to build better weapons and armor.

The crafting system will utilize items you unlock as the game progresses to make potions, weapons and the like, or you can just buy crucial components as in-app purchases. An very early version of the game should appear in Canadian and Australian iTunes Stores this week, but the global launch is slated for later this year and will include Android and Windows Phone 8
