The current Office for Mac hasn’t received a truly significant update since it came out in 2011. Now Microsoft is planning to finally release a new version of the software this year.
A Microsoft representative told Computerwoche in Germany that new versions of Office are in the works, and the company later confirmed the news to Macworld:
A representative for Microsoft confirmed that development work for the next version of Office for Mac is ongoing. “The team is hard at work on the next version of Office for Mac,” she said in an email. “While I don’t have details to share on timing, when it’s available, Office 365 subscribers will automatically get the next Office for Mac at no additional cost.”
Office:mac 2013 was apparently planned at one point, but Microsoft shut down its Mac business unit and the project was put on the back burner. The standalone Office for Mac blog was folded into the general Office Blogs yesterday.
Office for iPad has been rumored for years, but it looks like that app will finally come this year as well. Microsoft released Office Mobile for iPhone last summer, and the app currently has a two-in-a-half average star rating in the App Store.
