Time Machine-Like Arq Backs Up To The Cloud

By

Arq Backup is like Time Machine for your Mac, only it uses Amazon’s Glacier and S3 for storage instead of a local disk. It also looks dead easy to use.

To use the $40 Arq client, you just drag the folders you want to backup onto the app’s folder list, and then pick where you want to send them. Glacier is cheap but slow (one cent per Gigabyte per month) and S3 costs more but retrieving your backups is faster ($.085/GB per month).

Whichever you use, Arq will watch your folders for changes and update the online version to match.

The idea, I guess, is to use this for emergencies, and keep a local backup for regular use. Using theGlacier option on a 1TB hard drive would cost you $10 per month, which isn’t bad. And remember, you only really need to back up your home folder, as all your apps and the OS can be downloaded again from source.

You can also encrypt all your backups before they leave your machine for proper security, or use it to back up to external drives or network drives (I guess you could even use it with a Time capsule).

The app is available now, for the aforementioned $40, plus you Amazon fees.
