Volvo today confirmed that it will be one of the first to support Apple’s new CarPlay platform in its upcoming XC90 SUV, and it has released a new video that demonstrates how the technology will be used on the road to send messages, view maps, and control apps like Spotify.
The new video shows CarPlay running on a large screen mounted in the center of the XC90’s dashboard. It’s portrait-oriented, allowing CarPlay to run alongside Volvo’s own in-car computer technology.
“Volvo Cars’ portrait screen gives users the benefit of having both Volvo Cars and Apple content co-existing simultaneously, removing the need to switch between a dedicated car and iPhone screen,” Volvo says.
Just like your iOS device, it’s controlled by touch and voice, and it connects to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch via a Lightning cable — with Wi-Fi connectivity coming later on. Not only does CarPlay allow the use of basic apps like Phone, Messages, Maps, and Music while driving, but there will also be support for third-party titles like Spotify.
“iPhone users will feel completely at home in a new Volvo. We have created a wholly-integrated user experience in our large portrait-oriented touch screen that takes the in-car mobile device experience to a new level,” said Volvo’s Håkan Samuelsson.
“That, coupled with the obvious driver safety benefits of an advanced voice control system like Siri, made Apple a perfect match for Volvo.”
