One of our favorite games, FTL, is getting a massive update, plus an iPad version. That’s pretty darn exciting.

The update includes new advanced weaponry, new systems and subsystems, new drones and equipment, new music, and new story content. Best of all, it’s going to be a free update. In a tweet earlier today, the FTL team updated fans on what’s new, including new features like the clone bay, mind control, and hacking systems. The iPad version will include all of these things, too, in a game that will now be called FTL: Advanced Edition.

Check out the video below for some sweet visuals and auditory goodness.

FTL, originally released in September of 2012, puts you in charge of a starship that must jump from system to system. You’ll have to maintain the ship, manage your crew, and keep things upgraded and ready to fight, because you’ll come into contact with some pretty bad aliens out there, looking to take all your hard-earned spaceship away from you in tiny, exploded bits.

The micro-management space sim is a fantastic way to spend your gaming time. The new version will contain some pretty spiffy updates, as spelled out on the game developer’s website:

  • Mind Control System: Temporarily turn enemies into allies. Force a boarder to repair the damage they just did, or have the enemy pilot sabotage their own helm.
  • Hacking System: Lockdown and disrupt enemy systems. Unique effects for each system, ranging from forcing a teleporter remove boarders to making the medbay damage instead of heal.
  • New Sector and Events: Our writer Tom Jubert (https://tom-jubert.blogspot.co.uk/) has returned along with special guest writer Chris Avellone (of Planescape fame), who managed to find some time for us between his work on Project Eternity and Wasteland 2. They’ve been helping us add a new sector and scatter new events throughout the rest of the game.
  • New Weapons and Effects: Many new weapons that take advantage of new mechanics: overcharging to increase the number of volleys, stun effects to freeze crew, and area effect targeting, to name a few.

As you can see, the new update should bring quite a bit of challenge to the already difficult game. The addition of an iPad port will obviously introduce quite a few new gamers to the fantastically engaging world of FTL.
