Gross Shames You Into Getting Your Lazy A$$ Off The Couch

By

Gross is an iPhone app that’ll tell you just how lazy you’ve been for the last week. And believe me, unless you’re managing to get out an exercise in the middle of this icy winter, then the first time you fire up the app you’ll probably find yourself saying it’s name out loud.

The app uses the M7 MoCoPro in the iPhone 5s and the latest iPads to track your movement and plot them on a simple bar graph, showing you how active you’ve been over the past week. Tap a day and you’ll see a breakdown by activity: walking, running and cruising. And in each view there’s the “gross,” which here is used to mean the sum of the other amounts (complete with a selectively quoted dictionary definition to back up the shonky use of the word).

The neatest part is that the app will grab previously-collected data (the M7 records it and keeps it, ready for apps to ask for access), so if your M7 is running, you’ll automatically see the last 7 days’ of data on first launch.

When you realize that you only spent four active hours over the past week, it can be a little shaming. I have managed to write this off though, because I don’t always take my iPad mini out when I leave the house, but if I’m honest then this is still a shock – I’m used to riding 30km per day just to burn some energy.

Then again, it’s drizzling outside today, so maybe I’ll just go back to bed with a pot of tea and beat our own Luke Dormehl once again in the Sopranos category on QuizUp.

Gross is free.
