Arguably, the iPad needs an external camera add-on more than the iPhone, stuck as it is with a previous-gen camera and features. And Sony seems to agree. Now it will sell you an adapter that puts one of its neat QX lens cameras onto any table (or phablet, I guess).

To recap, the QX is a large-sensor camera in the shape of a lens that clips onto the back of your phone. It communicates with an iPhone app using Wi-Fi, effectively adding a high-quality lens and sensor to the iPhone itself.

And now it can do the same for your iPad. Or – if the photo is taken literally – to your Sony Xperia tablet (if you’re one of the three people that bought one).

I take almost no photo photos with my iPad mini, but that’s becasue my iPhone is always in my pocket and much quicker to use, and also because the iPad’s camera isn’t as good as the one in my iPhone 5. In principle, though, I’m not one of those iPad photo haters: although I do think it looks a little dorky in practice, the iPad gives you a camera with an eight or ten-inch retina viewfinder. Try finding that in any camera that’s not film. And with one of these neat little lenses added, the photos could be good enough to match the display.

The SPA-TA1 adapter will launch in Japan in April, for ¥3,675, or around $36. Plus the cost of a QX, of course.
