Realmac’s Clear ushered in a new approach to designing productivity apps, and a new calendar app called Peek has taken the same visual aesthetic and built upon it.
The name says it all. Peek is designed to let you see your schedule at a glance, and there are plenty of fairly intuitive gestures to help.
One of the most clever parts of the app to me is the shading gesture (showed in the video above) to check the time. Since Peek is fullscreen, you can’t see normal status bar info from iOS. Cover the top part of the iPhone like you’re shading it from the sun, and the time quickly fades into view. It’s one of the many little details that make the app interesting.
I’m a diehard Fantastical fan because of its simplicity, and Sunrise is another popular choice for people who want a calendar that’s more aware of platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn. Peek fits into another category of calendar apps. If you’re really into minimalistic, gesture-driven apps like Clear, than Peek will probably be right up your alley. But it seems just a little too quirky to attract most normal users looking for a better version of Apple’s Calendar app.
