What if you could print your iPhone photos and have them sent to your door, without paying a penny? Sound impossible, right? But that’s exactly what new Kickstarter-hopeful startup Flag is planning to do. The catch? An ad, printed on the back of each picture.

To make photo printing fun – for the first time by our reckoning – we’ve designed a photo finishing system ready for the 21st century. Museum quality (Giclée) [inkjet] printers, German 220 gram photo paper from sustainable sources, laser cutters, and robots with carbon fiber arms will allow Flag to deliver prints, for free, that are better than any you can pay for today.

Our secret to making photo printing free? An advertisement on the back of each print. It will always be tasteful, and we are steadfast in our commitment to never sell or share your personal information with advertisers.

Grab the app (if and when the campaign succeeds – it must be tricky pitching a free service on Kickstarter) and you can use it to select and edit photos, and order a pack of up to 20 prints a month, free. On the back will be those “tasteful” ads. If you want more prints, or fancier finishing and framing options that you get with the free tier, you can pay.

Not only do I not have any problem with print ads on the back of my photos, I actually love them. Imagine if this service had existed back in the 1970s or 1980s when everyone was getting their film photos printed. All those photos would now have period ads on the back, with amazing 70s color palettes and 80s scarecuts[1] and shoulder pads. And if you think the 80s looks weird today, imagine how quaint our own ads will be in just ten years, let alone 30.

If nothing else, the ad-supported service will act as a free trial to check the quality of the prints. Who knows if this’ll even work? I hope it does.
