Nope, Dropbox Wasn’t Hacked This Weekend. Here’s What Really Happened

If you tried to use Dropbox this weekend, chances are you noticed that the usually reliable cloud-storage service experienced an extended outage. What happened?

Dropbox went offline Friday evening, making the service totally inaccessible on the web and even desktop and mobile clients. For many people, service was restored a few hours later, but some users experienced intermittent problems for the remainder of the weekend.

According to Dropbox, even these users now have their service restored, and everything is said to be “back up and running” for everyone.

So what caused the downtime? Although early rumors pegged hacking or a denial of service attack, Dropbox says it was just a maintenance failure.

On Friday evening we began a routine server upgrade. Unfortunately, a bug installed this upgrade on several active servers, which brought down the entire service. Your files were always safe, and despite some reports, no hacking or DDOS attack was involved.

Good to know. Let’s just hope Dropbox doesn’t make a habit of it.
