Alpha 9

Fans of word games are always looking out for new apps that will let them arrange letters and clear blocks or cross things or whatever else people do when they’re using text as game pieces. Here’s another game that lets you do that.

It’s called Alpha 9, and it’s basically Boggle plus Tetris. Your goal is to form words of at least three letters in order to clear lines from a board to keep the letter blocks dropping from the ceiling from piling up to the top of the screen.

That’s Wall Mode, anyway. It has another game type, but they’re both pretty average.

Or maybe I’m just not that good at it. Not ruling it out.

The other mode, called “Clock,” just gives you a full board of tiles and leaves you to form as many words as possible before time runs out. In both, you can swipe letters along columns to make words (you only form them horizontally). If you arrange three identical tiles on top of one another, they combine into a blank tile that can be any letter you want.

Unfortunately, it didn’t do a whole lot for me.

It’s all fine. It has a cool and clean look with some trance-inducing music, just like we’ve come to expect from these sorts of things.

I’m not saying that the game is bad; it just didn’t grab me. It’s Yet Another Word Game, but what it does, it does well. The two game types provide plenty of replay value and challenge for those who want it, but unfortunately, it didn’t do a whole lot for me.

The Good: Quick and challenging; two modes accommodate different play styles and temperaments.
The Bad: The music gets monotonous and kinda drills into your brain after a while.
The Verdict: It’s a decent word game that doesn’t really do anything new, but it looks good and plays well.
