Particularly if you grew up in the 1980s, you’ll be familiar with games like the Castlevania series which ask the player to invade a villain’s lair.

Adult Swim’s new strategy game Castle Doombad cleverly turns that concept on its head: with gamers taking on the role of the princess-kidnapping Dr. Lord Evilstein, tasked with defending his tower against the various heroes who try and save the day.

The game (the generous trailer we’ve included above gives you 22 minutes of gameplay) is played from a side-view perspective, and asks you to place traps, upgrade weapons and unleash minions using a nifty drag-and-drop interface. As the game’s official description states,

“Across three chapters and 45 levels you’ll outwit intruders that attempt to invade your castle from all sides—ladders allowing them entrance on higher floors, underground drills to start on dungeon floors closer to your fair maiden. Keep the princess safely in your clutches and send those heroes cryin’ back to momma.”

Castle Doombad is available from the App Store with an asking price of $2.99.

We’ll have a review up after we’ve had a chance to take a deep dive into the world of Dr. Lord Evilstein… but not before.

(Insert evil laugh here.)
