User Upgradeable Everything: The New Mac Pro Is The Most Future Proof Mac Ever

There was a time when one of the few parts of your Mac that you could upgrade was the CPU, but recently, Apple has phased out CPU upgradeability in favor of slimmer form factors with soldered-in silicon chips.

One surprising exception to Apple’s stance against user upgradeability, however, is the 2013 Mac Pro, which is now confirmed to have a processor that can be upgraded by the user.

In a quick teardown of the new ‘Darth Vader’ Mac Pro 2013, Otherworld Computing (OWC) found that the Intel Xeon E5 processor inside the new Mac Pro is removable, using the lGA 2011 socket standard. That means that if you buy a Mac Pro now, you can upgrade its CPU down the line.

That’s great news, because right now, the CPU inside the Mac Pro is one of the biggest contributiros to its price fluctuations: in fact, depending on what CPU you choose, your Mac Pro can cost up to $3,500 more than the stock configuration.

This basically makes the Mac Pro the most upgradeable Mac you can possibly buy. While every other Mac has CPU, GPU, RAM and SSD soldered to the logic board, the new Mac Pro is CPU upgradeable, SSD upgradeable, RAM upgradeable, and the GPU is possibly upgradeable. The Mac Pro may be the most expensive Mac you can buy, but you’ll get more use out of it for more years than any others.
