Larger iPads and iPhones Coming In 2014 [Rumor]

Call it a stocking filler if you want, but Digitimes has one last (?) rumor to take us out of 2013: that Apple is planning to release a 12.9-inch tablet in October 2014, aimed at the North American educational market.

The rumors allegedly come from “sources from the upstream supply chain”.

According to the report, Apple had been considering adopting either 12.9- or 13.3-inch panels, although recent suggestions indicate that the 12.9-inch has a better chance of being picked as the finished model.

Apple’s large-size tablet will reportedly be manufactured by Quanta Computer, and is being viewed in terms of performance as a substitute for the 11-inch MacBook Air.

Apple is also rumored to be planning a larger size iPhone for May 2014, using a 20nm processor manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

To be fair, Digitimes is not the first time we have heard the larger-size iPad rumor. In May this year we reported on the “iPad Maxi” story — while in July the Wall Street Journal suggested that Apple is prototyping larger versions of both the iPad and iPhone.

If true, I don’t like that May 2014 timeframe for the iPhone. Apple should switch it, iPad in the early part of the year, iPhone towards the end. The reason? Most purchasers of new iPhone will be upgraders from other iPhones, most likely going from the 5 to the 6. Since most iPhone 5 contracts won’t be up until after September, people are going to look and see that the iPhone 6 is going to be half way through the upgrade cycle and wait for the iPhone 6S. They messed up pushing the 4s back, effectively moving iPhone launches from June/July to September/October. That would also make the iPhone 5s the shortest lived iPhone, coming in at only 7 months on the market (since it will probably be re-cased like the iPhone 5 and called the iPhone 5sC, or something like that) which wouldn’t make sense either.

Something about that May launch date just doesn’t sit right with me.

Release a new and larger iPhone that soon after the 5S is doubtful, as is the idea of an iPad that large being released as a replacement for the 11″ MBA.
A larger iPad wouldn’t surprise me is that there are more and more people whose computing needs can be met with a tablet, so one with a larger screen could well fit in there. As well as for professionals who feel the need for more screen real estate.
