This City-Destroying Robot Game Is Actually Pretty Damn Fun

Australian-based developer Halfbrick is at it again, with free-to-play Colossatron: Massive World Threat, now available around the globe.

You’ll take on the role of the humungous mechanical robot Colossatron on your quest to utterly destroy city after city, using various colored robotic modules to give your wanton destruction just a little extra oomph.

Yeah, color-matching doesn’t sound that fun, but this one? It really is.

The idea here is that you’re both watching live news coverage of the damage being caused by this massive robot snake/dragon, while alternately playing as that mecha-beast, destroying city after city with your red, green, blue, and yellow power modules, which you pick up and slide into place within the chain of the robot’s tail.

Place three modules of the same colors next to each other and they’ll combine into a bigger, badder weapon. Place two primary colors next to each other, however, and get a secondary color with an even cooler special power.

It’s easy to understand, and really well put together. This is a game that pulls you in just as quickly as Halfbrick’s other hit game, Jetpack Joyride, and the flow of short gaming sessions with high scoring systems in place is definitely borrowed from that successful game.

The team has spent the last year making Colossatron: Massive World Threat, and it shows. This is a paid app with optional in-app purchases, which makes a lot of sense here. The gameplay is a great mashup of tower defense and real-time strategy, and it’s worth your time, money, and attention.

Colossatron: Massive World Threat is available now in the App Store for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, and on Google Play and Amazon Appstore for Android.
