While no one puts baby in the corner, you can ignore that time-honored advice and actually put the Dock in the corner on the screen of your Mac.
While the traditional tools for moving the Dock around will let you move it to the right, left, or bottom of the screen, this little bit of Terminal magic will have the dock pinned to the far corners of your Mac’s screen, either the right bottom, the top left, or any other corner you can imagine.
First of all, use the standard Dock positioning system to put the Dock on the side of the screen you want it to end up on. Head up to click the Apple Menu, and hover your cursor over the Dock menu option. Then choose one of the positions, either Position on Left, Position on Bottom, or Position on Right. Your dock will sail over to that area right away.
Next, launch Terminal from the Dock, your Utilities folder, or any app launcher you may use. Once Terminal launches, you have a choice.
If you want to pin the dock to the bottom of the screen, or the right (the “end”), you’ll use the following command. Type or paste it into your Terminal window and hit Return.
defaults write com.apple.dock pinning end;killall Dock
Depending on where your Dock started, this will have the effect of sliding it to the right or the bottom of your screen.
If you want to pin your dock to the top or the left of your screen (the “start”), then all you need to do is issue the following, slightly different command into your Terminal window, then hit Return.
defaults write com.apple.dock pinning start;killall Dock
Once you issue either command, the Dock will restart itself, and then reappear in the position you wanted it.
If you want to return the Dock to its centered state, simply issue the following:
defaults write com.apple.dock pinning middle;killall Dock
For those of you wanting to do this in earlier versions of OS X prior to Mavericks, captialize the first Dock term, e.g., “defaults write com.apple.Dock pinning start;killall Dock” and it should work just fine.
