Most of us are aware that the iPhone can be an effective security tool; there are countless clips on YouTube proving its worth as a recording device, and FaceTime, Skype and the like allow someone on the other end to watch, and if needed send help, when things get sketchy.
A recording of a mugging, however, is no use if the muggers steal the phone; and initiating a FaceTime call under extreme stress is probably more difficult than it might seem.
Enter Eye Got You Covered, a $4 app that fixes both those problems and adds other thoughtful features.
For starters, the app keeps things very simple. Just tap the big red shield on the app’s main screen to begin recording video and sound. The app then does three things simultaneously: it records locally, sends a live stream to a pre-chosen emergency contact’s iPhone and also records to Eye Got You Covered’s cloud server. The only other option on the screen is whether to record via the iPhone’s front or rear camera. Once recording begins the screen also goes black so there’s no tipoff that the iPhone is recording anything.
The streams can the be accessed later from the web; Andrew Chen, the company’s co-founder, told us that the app will stream in as high as 1080p, assuming good bandwidth — theoretically easily good enough for identification.
In addition to the $4 cost of the app, there’s also an additional $4/year subscription fee that Andrew says is for the cloud service.
