Has it really been less than three months since the roll out of iOS 7?
Well, however long it has been that has clearly been enough time for most users — since new data from online ad network Chitika reveals that iOS 7 is currently running on more than 70 percent of North American iOS devices.
“This makes it very likely that iOS 7 will continue to substantially outpace iOS 6 adoption, which reached 83 per cent close to six months following its release in September 2012,” the company noted in its report.
This quick adoption rate has already broken records. Within 24 hours of its public release, iOS 7 was already running on more than 18 percent of North American iOS devices — compared to iOS 6, which was installed on 14.8 percent of iOS devices after that same period of time.
Following its first week, iOS 7 represented more than half of all iOS-based web traffic in North America.
Looking at Chitika’s data by device, iPhone users are “slightly more likely” to have adopted iOS 7 compared to iPad owners — with figures of 74 percent vs. 64 percent.
Close to 9 per cent of iPads are still running the older iOS 5, next to under 3 per cent of iPhones.
“The slightly lower adoption rate of iOS 7 is likely least partially due to features like AirDrop not coming to the iPad 2 or 3, minimizing the incentive for users of those devices to upgrade,” Chitika observes.
To measure iOS version distribution, Chitika examined a sample of about 300 million U.S. and Canadian impressions on its network from October 25 through November 18.
