Due to a combination of laziness and… actually just laziness, I often use my iPhone to take product shots for the reviews you see here on Cult of Mac. And while my Snapseed usually lets me turn my snaps into usable photos, I could sometimes do with a little help trying to find a spot on my desk that isn’t covered in junk to use as a backdrop.
Yes, I could clean up, but as I mentioned above, I’m terminally lazy. So I might instead adopt Andrew Park’s Foldio, a tiny light tent for iPhone product shots and the like.
Foldio is billed as a “portable studio,” which is pretty accurate. It consists of a collapsible white box, an LED light strip and a set of (optional) colored background sheets. Thus you can put together an evenly-lit environment with a seamless backdrop for really professional looking pictures. And you can do it in the middle of an embarrassingly cluttered desk without anyone ever knowing.
The laminated paper that makes up the Foldio is water resistant and snaps into shape using magnets, and the embedded LEDs combined with the big white box make for evenly-lit photos. And clearly it’s something people want, as the Kickstarter has already doubled it’s goal just a few days from launch. And you can sign up too: $34 will get you a basic all-white version, and $43 will upgrade you to a Foldio with colored sheets.
Shipping is estimated for February next year, so you might want to just go buy some white card and an LED lamp and play around with those for a few months instead. Me? I guess I’ll tidy my desk after all.
