Unbound for Mac has finally reached v1.0, and you’re probably going to love it. Point Unbound at a folder on your Mac and it’ll turn any folders inside into beautiful, browsable photos albums. It’s like what iPhoto would be if iPhoto had grown up in an alternate universe where bloated software was a bad thing.
Unbound is the desktop version of Unbound HD for the iPad, an app that uses your Dropbox as a source for photos and presents them to you just like the iOS photos app. Unbound for Mac looks similar, with stacks of thumbnails showing folders, and support for many gestures. It’s ideal if you keep your photos in a folder structure and want a lightweight, fast way to browse them.
Unbound can only be used with one folder at a time (the sub folders are the albums), and it doesn’t support symbolic links (no cheating like you can with Dropbox). It’s also buggy in this release, despite being available as a beta for many months – I got SQLl lite errors or some such thing when I tried to do some arranging of albums.
The app also supports the Leap Motion controller, letting you wave at your Mac to flip through your photos, but oddly has only limited support for trackpad gestures. In the thumbnail (album) view, gestures don’t work at all; it’s all old-school clicking. In the full-screen photo view, you can pinch to zoom and swipe with two fingers to pan and switch to the previous/next picture, but you can’t pinch to return to the thumb view.
The app is pretty neat, and fast. But it still feels like a beta. A beta I just paid $10 for, which makes me a little annoyed. There is, however, a free trial.
