Forgetting the disaster that was Battlefield 3: AftershockI’ve always thought EA’s other Battlefield titles for iOS were pretty good. But the company has promised a new “high-end” and “high-performance” Battlefield title for mobile that could come a little closer to its console counterpart — and may even be able to “inter-operate” with it.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Frank Gibeau, head of EA’s mobile development division, was asked whether he thought Battlefield could really be enjoyed on the smaller displays of mobile devices. He noted that you can already play the game on a tablet in “commander mode,” but hinted at more exciting things to come.

“We are working on a mobile game of Battlefield that will be high-end and high-performance. It’s our bet that we can successfully pull that off,” Gibeau said. “But we’re embarking on something no one has ever done before — to get these games to inter-operate between platforms.”

“Will it work? It already has in some cases. Will it work for all franchises? Not all franchises will make the transition.”

Gibeau added that that “transition” may be a little harder for a title like Battlefield, but he’s clearly confident that EA can pull it off — and the company is already working on making that happen.

It’s unclear how Battlefield might “inter-operate” between consoles and mobile devices, but as a massive fan of first-person shooters, I can’t wait to see what EA has up its sleeve.
