While the highlight of Apple’s press event on Tuesday will undoubtedly be its new iPads, we were also expecting the Cupertino company to announce a new Apple TV. But a new report suggests the fourth-generation set-top box has been “delayed a bit,” and that it won’t be ready for tomorrow’s event after all.
TechCrunch columnist and Google Ventures general partner MG Siegler, who was one of the first to report that we would see a new Apple TV tomorrow, wrote on his blog this weekend, “While I still haven’t heard anything concrete, the most recent whispers I have heard is that the Apple TV project has been delayed a bit.”
Back in September, just before iOS 7 made its public debut, Siegler published a tweet that teased the fourth-generation device, and said those “excited about a software refresh in a week are gonna be really excited when new Apple TV hardware is unveiled next month.”
He now believes that although we may still see a minor Apple TV update at the event, “the thing to be more excited about, the device with some sort of newfangled control system, doesn’t seem like it’s ready just yet.”
Apple may still announce a new Apple TV, then — or at least add a new one to its online store when it updates it for the new iPads — but it may simply be an incremental upgrade to the existing model. The true next-generation device may not come until a little later on.
The Apple TV hasn’t received a significant refresh since March 2012, when Apple added a faster processor that was capable of powering 1080p video playback. The device is long overdue an update, then.
