Just a week or so ago, we quoted a Square Enix producer saying that there were a lot of fans in the offices who wanted to see a Final Fantasy VII port happen. But don’t hold your breath, as millions of fans appear to have done, promting Square Enix to set the record straight: it’s years away from happening, if ever.

What’s the problem? According to Square Enix, it’s a file size issue.

Unfortunately, it’s not that it’s not impossible for us to develop Final Fantasy 7 for mobile. It’s that currently, space will be an issue. Phones won’t be able to contain the space it takes. It’s over a gigabyte. People are probably going to have to wait a few years.

Final Fantasy VII is a truly massive game, but the App Store has a filesize limit of 2GB. On the PlayStation Network, it clocks in at just 1.37GB, or about the size of Infinity Blade. Sure, a little beefy, but certainly not enough to prevent it from being released.

The bigger issue probably is that Final Fantasy VII would look terrible on modern devices without extensive remastering. Square Enix has gone through the trouble of remastering earlier Final Fantasy games, but not the latest ones. If they haven’t started yet, it’ll take years to get done.

In the meantime, you’ve got Final Fantasy VI to keep you company.
