Evernote announced Monday the availability of Two-Step Verification for all its users, increasing security for everyone, instead of just the premium members.
In a blog post, Evernote’s Andrew Sinkov said that the software company values its users’ data security. The feature was introduced with a few other security measures last month, including Access History and Authorized Applications, but was only available for Evernote Premium and Evernote Business users.
These extra security features are now available to all Evernote users.
The Evernote blog explains the process:
Two-step verification, also known as two-factor authentication, adds an additional layer of security to the login process, requiring you to enter a special code from your phone, in addition to your regular username and password. The goal of this extra step is to combine something you know (your password) with something only you would have access to (your phone).
Setting up this new process is simple. If you’re an Evernote premium or business user, you’ll be able to get the code delivered as a text message. If you’re a free member, you’ll need to download and install an authentication app on your mobile phone, like the recommended Google Authenticator.
You’ll get a set of codes to use in case you can’t access your phone for some reason, but don’t keep them in Evernote, since you’ll only need them when you can’t, well, use Evernote. Get it?
It’s great to see Evernote implementing these features for free as well as paid members, since we all benefit from improved security across all our devices and services.
Evernote is available as a free download from the Mac App Store and the iTunes App Store, and premium accounts cost $5 per month or $45 per year.
