Strava Run Now Uses M7 Chip For Better Accuracy And Battery Life

Strava Run, the fitness-tracking app that records your runs and lets you compete against strangers who have use the same routes, might be the first fitness app to take advantage of the M7 Motion Coprocessor (MoCoPro) in the iPhone 5S.

Now the app will not only run for longer thanks to saved battery power, it’s more accurate too.

This is exactly the kind of thing the M7 was made for: the iPhone has a great array of sensor to track everything from your speed to your position to your attitude (the direction you’re facing, not the way you talk to your mother when she asks you to finish your chores). But these sensors require the CPU to be powered on, as well as the GPS.

As the new Strava update demonstrates, using a dedicated low-power chip to process this info ,and then pass it all on to any app that wants it when that app is launched, saves the battery and – it seems – makes for more accurate readings: Strava Run will give you “better accuracy in your pace and feedback” as well as pausing the record when you stop running.

Where next? I can;t wait to see some life-logging apps that tell you everywhere you went, as well as tracking apps that let you geotag the photos you took with your regular dumb camera.
