YouTube has today announced that you will soon be able to download videos and watch them offline on your mobile devices. You won’t be able to hold onto them forever, but YouTube says users will be able to “add videos to their device to watch for a short period when an Internet connection is unavailable.”

While some third-party YouTube clients have offered video downloading in the past, the feature was previously against YouTube’s terms and conditions. Now that appears to have changed slightly for the sake of offline viewing on mobile devices.

“We’re always exploring ways to bring more viewers to your content. As part of this effort, later this year we’ll launch a new feature on YouTube’s mobile apps that will help you reach fans — even when they’re not connected to the Internet,” YouTube said in a blog post today.

“This upcoming feature will allow people to add videos to their device to watch for a short period when an Internet connection is unavailable. So your fans’ ability to enjoy your videos no longer has to be interrupted by something as commonplace as a morning commute.”

You should expect to see the new updates sometime in November.
