Sir Jony Ive and famed designer Marc Newson have teamed up with Bono to a mega-auction of fancy master-pieces of design that will be sold to benefit (RED). Among the list of items up for grabs is a custom pair of Apple EarPods made of solid rose gold.
Jony and Marc actually did all the curation of the collection themselves over the past year, as well as collaborating on two custom made items – a Leica Digital Rangefinder Camera, and an aluminum desk produced by Neal Feay Studios. A total of 40 items will be auctioned off, including pieces from space travel, lighting, contemporary art and rare automobiles.
Here’s what Jony had to say about his contribution:
“It’s been a fantastic honor to curate this collection of objects with Marc, for the auction at Sotheby’s. Each piece represents the value of thoughtful design. What we create for each other is not only a comment on our culture, but of course in many ways it defines it. (RED) is making a difference in the lives of millions of people and we’re humbled to make this contribution to such an important and worthy cause.”
All the proceeds go to the Global Fund to help fight AIDS, Malaria, and Tuberculosis. The auction is a followup to the 2008 (RED) auction that raised $40 million. Sir Jony’s auction won’t take place until November 23rd 2013, so you’ve still got a little bit of time to sell your plasma, sperms, and kidneys to fetch the extra cash to afford those little gold EarPods.
