Go figure. Just a week and a half before Apple is set to launch iOS 7 out into the world, someone has finally succeeded in hacking iOS 6.1.4. Oh, the irony!
As you might recall, the last great jailbreak was the Evasi0n jailbreak, which was capable of jailbreaking all iOS devices from iOS 6 to iOS 6.1.2. That was about seven months ago. Apple, as they usually do, rapidly updated iOS 6 to version 6.1.3, killing the vulnerability the exploit required to work.
But now Hacker winocm has posted screenshots, showing that he has managed to jailbreak the iPhone 5 on both AT&T and Verizon using iOS 6.1.4. In fact, both devices are now capable of running Cydia, the jailbreak App Store.
Supposedly, this exploit doesn’t jeopardize or expose vulnerabilities that other hackers are counting on in order to exploit iOS 7, a jailbreak which might already be in the chamber.
Still, it’s unknown if this jailbreak will become publicly available. If I had to guess, I’d say no: iOS 7 is too close to dropping, and just because a lone hacker can jailbreak his own device doesn’t mean he can put together a package that seamlessly does it for millions of people without hacking abilities. On the bright side, this exploit might help cut down some of the lead time it will take to jailbreak the iPhone 5S, which we’ve previously calculated to take about 189 days.
