SEATTLE, PAX 2013 – Picture this: you pull out that old Dance Dance Revolution pad, connect it to your Mac, and then dance your way through procedurally generated dungeons, tapping your feet and bouncing to the beat as you kill monsters, loot chests, and equip yourself with ever more powerful weapons.

Wait, what?

Vancouver-based Brace Yourself Games (aka Ryan Clark) has perhaps stumped even the most open minded among us with this new combination, found in upcoming game, Crypt of the NecroDancer.

The game, coming soon to Mac and PC, is a mash up of rhythm and rogue-like game genres, brining you something completely different. Billed as a “hardcore roguelike rhythm game,” Curse of the NecroDancer was a big draw this weekend at the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in Seattle, with large groups of attendees stopping to watch as yet another lucky bystander hopped onto the dance pad and crawled, er, danced, the dungeons.

Sound designer Kevin Regamey was on hand to tell us that the game lets players use the soundtrack of killer tunes as well as their own MP3s as they tap their way along. There’s a keyboard option, as well, of course, but it’s not going to be as fun as the DDR pad, trust us.

When you get in the groove, Regamey said, meaning a certain number of moves without damage or running into walls or monsters, the dungeon floor starts flashing lights in a checkerboard pattern. “You see that?” Regamey asked. “That’s disco mode.”

Yes.

Crypt of the NecroDancer should be out on Mac and PC, via Steam or direct download, in the next couple of months. We’ll keep you informed as we get more details.
