If you like dystopian science fiction novels, Blackbar is for you. If you like innovative gaming experiences with solid fiction writing and a simple yet engaging mechanic, Blackbar is also for you.
If, however, you prefer your gaming to have lots of explosions and tons of hoorah military sentiment, Blackbar might not be for you. But you should try it anyway.
Blackbar is the ultimate low-fi indie game, for serious, what with its typewritten pages of letters sent by Vi to her hometown friend, Kendy. Vi has gone off to the big city, see, but the only way to send letters home is through the Department of Communication, which censors letters mercilessly.
Words in the letters from Vi are redacted with — you guessed it — a black bar, mirroring real world documents you may have seen in the news recently. Here’s my play through of about four minutes of the game, sped up to condense it down to under two minutes.
As you can see, this game isn’t a visual treat, but it’s a fantastic, innovative way to present a story and a game in the fast paced, casual gaming world of mobile and iOS gaming.
