Use Spotlight To Find And Reveal Files In The Finder [OS X Tips]

Spotlight Find and Reveal

Sure, there are quite a few keyboard shortcuts to navigate Spotlight, making it more of a power user tool than you’d think.

Did you know, however, that you can reveal found items in the Finder using Spotlight? Me neither. So here’s how.

Use Command-Space or click on the Spotlight magnifying glass in the upper right hand corner of your Mac’s screen to activate Spotlight.

Type in a search term for any file you might want to find and then reveal in the Finder.

Once you’ve found the file you’re looking for, either hover the mouse over it, or use the arrow keys to move the highlight over the file name in Spotlight. A preview of the item will show up to the left after a short delay.

Now for the fun part. If you hit Command-Enter while the file is highlighted, your Mac will open the Finder window that contains that file. So, if you’re looking to remember where that app is that you filed away somewhere, or you need to find that specific document, but you can’t remember where you put it, this is a great, quick way to both find and then access that file in whatever folder it’s in.

Sometimes it’s just easy like this.
