Plants vs. Zombies 2 hasn’t even been available to download from the U.S. App Store for a full week yet, and it has already seen over 16 million downloads, making it the “biggest mobile game launch” in EA’s history. It’s no wonder the company is already planning a new “Far Future” update that will bring new content to the free-to-play title.

Technically, Plants vs. Zombies first came to iOS back in July, but it strangely remained exclusive to the New Zealand App Store until last Wednesday, when it finally rolled out internationally. In that time, players have generated over 11 billion suns, fought over 2 billion waves of zombies, and played for around 25 million hours.

Given that the original Plants vs. Zombies title was a massive hit, we always knew that the sequel would be big. Some were worried that EA’s “freemium” approach, which lets players download and play the game for free, but encourages them to splash on in-app purchases, would spoil the title — but that certainly doesn’t appear to be the case for most.

If you’ve already played through Plants vs. Zombies 2, you’ll be pleased to know that EA has today announced a new “Far Future” content pack that will be coming soon. We don’t know exactly when it will be available yet, or what it will bring, but it’ll surely be an update to look forward to.

You can download Plants vs. Zombies 2 from the App Store now, and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Those on Android should see the title later this year.
