This is #BackToSchool week at Cult of Mac Deals. There will be several new deals launching each day. Check in here each day for new deals for #BackToSchool. There will be a ton of apps, gear, gadgets, games, and more to buy just in time for the start of school, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for deals that have school — and savings — in mind.

The last thing you want when you get back to school is to wade through tons of digital clutter. Not only does it slow you down, but it can slow your Mac down if you’ve maxed out its internal drive with music, photos, and documents.

So before you hit the books again, breathe some new life into your Mac by cleaning out your Mac and claiming back some of that much-needed space on your drive. Here are some of the areas you should focus just a little bit of time on so that you can return to school with a cleaner, more organized Mac.

Documents

Your documents folder is likely going to be the one you’ll use the most during the school year, so keeping it as organized as possible is a wise move. Sure, the size of document files are much smaller than photo and video files, but they can add up over time. Using an app like Hazel to automatically sort documents into folders is a good way to go. Cult of Mac has looked at Hazel before, most recently here.

Photos and Videos

If you’ve got an iPhone and/or an iPad, I suggest you keep the majority of the photos you’ll want to share (or videos you’ll want to view) regularly on those devices, leaving your Mac as photo and video-free as possible. Invest in an external drive that has enough capacity to store files of that size, and then have iPhoto point to it for its library settings. It may take a bit of setup to make it happen, but it’s definitely worthwhile – and a real space-saver.

Music

Music can be a big help when studying, and iTunes can be just the place to store your music for when you need it. Sure, you could store your music on an external drive, but with a product like Leawo Tunes Cleaner (currently just $4.99 through Cult of Mac Deals), you can keep your iTunes clean and organized. For those moments when you want to study in the library and not drain the juice out of your iDevices (although Cult of Mac Deals has something that will help you out with that right now too), keeping your iTunes library locally is a wise move. Just keep it neat and tidy with Leawo Tunes Cleaner.

Taking the time to set your Mac up for the school year now is much smarter than waiting until your mind is supposed to be on something else – like schoolwork. So set your Mac up today so that you won’t be upset later.
