Following reports that it was looking to open a new research and development center in Taiwan, Apple is now going on a massive hiring binge in China for talented engineers, having recently put up openings for over 300 new employees in Taiwan on the professional social networking site LinkedIn.

In addition to those jobs, Apple has recently posted positions on its official career website that include openings for a senior packaging engineer, reliability engineering manager, senior software instrumentation engineer, senior AC-DC design engineer and sensing system hardware engineer, all based in Taiwan. But why is Apple investing so strongly in Taiwan right now?

Digitimes expounds upon the hires, saying that Apple is apparently considering forming partnerships with Wistron and Compal Communications to “diversify risks and lower costs.” TSMC, the world’s largest independent foundry, is also based in Taiwan, and TSMC has recently signed deals with Apple to start making A-series chips for iOS devices starting in 2014.

What this all adds up to is that there’s a lot of reason for Apple to start investing in Taiwan right around now. Not only will new local partnerships help Apple reduce its dependency upon Foxconn, but TSMC’s local chipmaking foundries will also help Apple stop pouring billions of dollars into Samsung, the company’s archrival and (right now) main supplier of SoCs meant for various iDevices.

China’s becoming an increasingly important market for Apple, so it makes sense that Cupertino would expand their operations. Who knows? Maybe in fifty years, Apple will have their headquarters there.
