Apple releases Graphics Firmware Update for 27-inch iMacs

Apple’s 27 inch iMac is the sexiest machines in Apple’s already sexed-out line of computers, but it’s been worth waiting to buy one: the first batch had numerous problems, including cracked screens, flickering displays and a yellow, nicotine-like graphical patina.

Rumor had it that Apple was scrambling to replace faulty ATI Radeon HD 4670 and 4850 GPUs on their iMacs, which strongly implied the problem was hardware, not software. Nevertheless, Software Update has just pumped out a Graphics Firmware Update for the 27-inch iMac that “address[es] issues that may cause image corruption or display flickering.”

Jury’s still out on whether or not this solves the widescale problems people are having with their iMacs. Any cultists out there with a 27-incher who can tell us how their baby is handling its new medicine?

you make it sound like ALL the 27 inch computers had these problems but between my friends, my office and myself, I”ve looked at 30 27 inch computers (including 8 i7s) and not a one had any of those problems. and I shop between 4 Apple Stores and when the problems started I asked them about it and they had no idea. None of the ones they had put on display had problems (that was like 12 computers), none of the computers sold had come back reported as defective and they weren’t seeing a rush for tech support.

and even on the boards not everyone was reporting issues.

I’m away from my iMac, and plan on contacting apple care when I’m back, but I’ve noticed a slight glitch with my 21.5 incher. When watching video or scrolling down a page, there’s a flickering line somewhere in the screen (only one line at a time, but it moves around). Now I have the upgraded 4670 card-like in the 27′s, so would this be the issue in question?

I’ll see if I can get the firmware update when I get back.

We have had no problem with our 27″ iMac. However, it is sitting on a desk with a hutch that is barely taller than the computer. There is no where for the heat to go, so I have a little fan blowing the air around up there to keep things cool. I wonder if some people are letting their iMacs overheat and that is causing problems.

Like this website for its unique content and writers, so don’t like seeing an entire page copied from Apple’s website.Mr Brownlee’s name is so close that it appears he’s the author of the Apple page.

Hope not to see this again in the future, guys.

@FeralFreq: You probably will, since your criticism makes absolutely no sense. Sorry that you think a screenshot is plagiarism.
