The United States International Trade Commission (ITC) has ruled in favor of Apple today by finding Samsung guilty of patent infringement in two cases. This marks the ITC’s final ruling from the original complaint Apple filed against Samsung back in 2011, reports FOSS Patents. Apple won a decisive victory against Samsung last year that involved over a half billion dollars in damages, and President Obama recently vetoed a sales ban on older Apple products that the ITC had awarded Samsung.
Obama could veto today’s proposed ban on certain Samsung products, but the chances of that happening are slim. The patent infringement doesn’t extend to Samsung’s entire lineup, but only older devices. If Samsung can’t find a design workaround for the infringed Apple patents and a veto doesn’t happen, the ITC will keep those older Samsung devices off the shelves. It won’t hurt Samsung’s bottom line too much, but the ruling is still a tough pill to swallow.
“All in all, today has been a good day for Apple, and the likelihood of Samsung accepting to settle on Apple’s terms has definitely increased, though the dispute could also continue for another year or more (nobody knows),” reports FOSS Patents.
