Grid, An Intuitive, Gesture-Based Note-Taking App

Grid is a pretty cool new app which brings a new approach to note taking. It uses a flat grid metaphor and some very easy-to-use gestures to add contacts, photos, notes and places.

The free app opens with a short tutorial, showing you how it works. It’s dead simple: Tap an empty square on the white grid to select it, and a green blob appears. Drag the blob across more squares to choose the size and shape of your new rectangle. Then swipe up on the blob to get a chooser, letting you pick from the aforementioned maps, notes, photos or contacts.

Once you have added one of these, you can drag them around the grid to reorganize them, and tap to edit and resize the containing rectangles.

I haven’t yet come up with a practical use for Grid, but I can see that it could easily grow into something rather handy, especially if the tiles were somehow linked to the outside world so they could update – perhaps the notes could be linked to text files in Dropbox, for example.

It’s a new app, so it’s a little odd—if you drag one item over another and then drop it, the lower item is deleted immediately, which is as annoying as it sounds. In other ways, it’s very slick: the note editor, with bold, italics, colors and font size adjustment is very nice indeed.

Like I said, I have no immediate use for it, but this will be going in my Sleepers folder on my iPad awaiting updates.
