The above photo shows what is allegedly Apple packaging for an unreleased “iPhone 5C.” The packaging comes from the supply chain overseas and was first posted on the Chinese forum WeiPhone. It’s important to note up front that there is no way of confirming the packaging’s authenticity, but if it’s real, it has most likely revealed the name for the rumored budget iPhone.
Since rumors about Apple making a cheaper iPhone started gaining momentum earlier in the year, much of the press has dubbed the unannounced product the ‘budget’ iPhone. The device is expected to feature a less expensive, plastic shell that will be available in a variety of colors.
If Apple does indeed choose to call this product the iPhone 5C, the “C” could very well stand for “Color.” Multiple part leaks have revealed that Apple is experimenting with several bright color options beyond the basic black and white. “5C” could be a clever name for marketing that differentiates the device from the iPhone 5 but also makes it sound current.
The packaging looks very much like what Apple ships the iPod touch in, which could also be very telling for how Apple plans to market the device. Rumors say that Apple is going with a $300-$400 price point unsubsidized, which means without a two-year carrier contract like the current iPhone model. If a carrier contract, the price would presumably be cheaper than $200.
The fact that there is still a “5” in 5C supports the idea that the budget iPhone will be a modified version of the iPhone 5 with a cheaper exterior. Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 5C (if that ends up being the real name) alongside the iPhone 5S at a media event in the fall.
