You might not know the name, but you definitely know the work. If you have seen Star Wars, or Robocop, or Jurassic Park[1], you’ve seen Phil Tippet’s stop-motion (and go-motion) animation. Tauntaun? Tippet. ED–209? Tippet again.

And now you can buy 3-D character animations by the Tippett Creature Shop right inside a new storefront in the Efexio iPad app.

Efexio lets you add high-quality 3-D models to your own photos and videos. Drop aliens, robots, zombies and dinosaurs into your creations, tweak the lighting and apply grading to pull the whole lot together. As someone who ditched a scene in a short movie I made in college because I could’t work out how to add a laser blast to a video sequence (on actual tape), I can appreciate the awesomeness of this.

But you know who’ll appreciate it even more? Eight-year-old boys. My nephew wouldn’t stop bugging me to make yet more VFX sequences with him using some crappy app I had at the time. If I’d had Efexio and Tippet’s creature store, I would never have gotten my iPad back.

The app is available now, for free, and the store contains all manner for awesomeness from $0 up.

And just for fun (and because they’re amazing), here are a couple of reviews from the App Store:

I added a Dino to one of me and my friends pictures and they loved it and your friends with love it to. If you have friends that is… But anyway just get the app. Just get it.

And:

Penguins a big hit, as are the dinosaurs.

Quite.

  1. According to Wikipedia, Tippet’s credit on Jurassic Park was for “dinosaur supervisor.” Hard to beat that as a job title.  ↩
