Chair Entertainment has confirmed that Infinity Blade: Dungeons, the third installment in the Infinity Blade franchise for iOS, has officially been canned.
Fans have been looking forward to the title since it was announced last March during an Apple iPad event, but its future has looked uncertain since the studio that was developing the game, Impossible Games, was closed back in February.
Infinity Blade: Dungeons was put “on hold” following the closure while Epic Games decided what to do with it, but even then, we felt it would still arrive at some point. But chair co-founder and creative director Donald Mustard has confirmed that it has now been scrapped.
“When the studio that was working on [Dungeons] was closed, the game was canceled. That’s really all I can say,” Mustard said during the most recent episode of the Epic Games podcast.
The news is somewhat surprising given the success the Infinity Blade titles have enjoyed on iOS. Both have been massive sellers, with the original making $30 million as of January 2012 to become Epic’s most profitable game ever.
It seems pretty crazy that the sequel would be canned, then.
But that’s not the end of the Infinity Blade franchise. Mustard revealed that “there’s more we at Chair are totally planning to do in the Infinity Blade universe. More games, more books, maybe even other products. And we are very excited about that.”
Infinity Blade will live on, then, but Infinity Blade: Dungeons will never reach the App Store.
