Poppy is a box containing lenses and mirrors that turns you iPhone into a 3-D viewer – or a 3-D camera. If you ever used one of the old 3-D Viewmasters, this is exactly the same. Except it uses an iPhone instead of a card circle of tiny film slides. And you can film with it as well as view. And it does video.

So not quite exactly the same, then…

The Poppy uses optics to capture two images side-by-side, and then record them as two side-by-side videos using your iPhone’s camera. Then, flip the iPhone around and use the same eyepieces to look at your screen, sending the left image to your left eye and the right to your right. Simple, and effective.

Hell, you could even play 3-D games on this thing if anyone made them.

And you’re not limited to video you shoot yourself. YouTube can show you 3-D videos split into two adjacent left/right sides, and apps like CineXPlayer can even fake 3-D from 2-D movies.

It’s a Kickstarter sadly, meaning the earliest you can hope to get your hands on a Poppy is December. Then again, it’s cheap at $50. This – adjusted for 1970s values, is probably cheaper than a new Viewmaster.
