Halopad Stand Still Looks Like A Not-Ugly Ashtray

Readers with long memories for frustratingly future-distant Kickstarter projects might remember the Halopad. It was a “universal” iPad stand which I described generously as “like a pub ashtray with the bottom cut out” and – with even more generosity – “not ugly.” And now that the stand is finally for sale, I stand by both of those gushing endorsements.

IPad stands seem unneeded at first, but it soon becomes clear that the Smart Cover is pointless as an actual stand: it collapses when you type on it and – in it’s vertical mode – it topples over as soon as you breath near it. I use the still-amazing PadPivot on an almost hourly basis to prop my iPad on the kitchen table, on my lap, on a pillow in my bed (or as I like to call it, “my office”) or on top of the otherwise useless Smart Cover on the bed (again) to watch TV shows with The Lady.

So a stand is a good idea, and this stand looks to be a good bet id stability is your thing. To quote myself again, “the 280-gram base (ten ounces) is round and fat for stability on hard and soft surfaces alike, and has slots cut at 18˚ and 45˚ which can hold the iPad both horizontally and vertically.”

You can buy it now for around €30 ($40).

But you know what I like best about my original article, back in the early days of 2012? It’s that I mentioned the Motorola Xoom. Remember those?
