XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the highly-acclaimed tactical role-playing game from 2K Games, is coming to iOS this week, and it’s just begun its App Store rollout. It’s an exact port of the title that first hit the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 late last year, so you can expect a true console-quality experience and amazing visuals.

Those things don’t come cheap, however, with XCOM priced at $19.99 in the U.S.

There’s been a lot of debate over that price tag. While $2o would generally be considered a bargain for a console game, it’s very rare you see a price tag that steep in the App Store, where almost everything sell for $7 or less, and many of the latest games are now free-to-play.

Nevertheless, XCOM is an incredible game, and those who are willing to spend $20 on it should be more than pleased with their purchase. For those who haven’t played it before, you take command of a team of XCOM soldiers and lead them through intense turn-based battles against an alien invasion.

Im between battles, you control the XCOM base, managing its resources, upgrading your soldiers, developing new technologies that’ll aid your mission, and controlling the Earth’s air defenses.

XCOM received glowing reviews when it landed on consoles last October, and the iOS version is identical — only it’s had touch controls added, of course. So you can expect the same storyline, the same gameplay, and the same visuals. The game’s developer is even promising an online multiplayer mode in a future update.

While it may be more expensive than most, then, XCOM could be one of the greatest titles your add to your home screen.

As is often the case with iOS releases, the game is launching in New Zealand first (because they’re so many hours ahead of everyone else), but you should see it in your country just after midnight local time. Its official release date is Thursday, June 20.

We advise you to start downloading it before going to bed, though, because the game weighs in at a whopping 1.86GB, and it’s likely to take some time to install. On that note, you may want to consider making space for it now.
