In iTunes 11, Apple gave us the ability to redeem iTunes and App Store gift cards using the FaceTime camera built into our Macs, and it is bringing the same functionality to our iOS devices with iOS 7. Instead of typing in lengthy codes, just point your camera at the gift card to redeem it.

The feature was spotted by tech enthusiast Beau Giles, who posted a screenshot of a gift card scan on Twitter. It’s available through both the iTunes Store and App Store apps on an iOS devices by tapping the “Redeem” button at the bottom of the Featured page.

iDownloadBlog also notes that Apple has also opened up this feature to developers and provided them with an API that will allow them to integrate barcode and number scanning into their own apps. Some already provide this feature, of course, but now it’s a part of the OS.
