Shelfy is a new iPhone app which lets you quickly and easily keep a record of the books you have read, and the books you want to read. And unlike apps like Delicious Library, it doesn’t assume that you have a stack of physical paper books to scan: Input is strictly via search, and all the better for it.
The app is free, and lets you add up to 15 books to get the hang of things. If you like it then you can pay $3 to upgrade to unlimited books.
But is it useful?
It can’t be too hard: All I want is an app that lets me quickly add all the books I have read, and then lets me share and/or sync that list with the online device of my choice, be that Shelfari, or Goodreads, or whatever else it was that Amazon bought last week. I don’t need to have a list of every book I own or have ever read, but I’d like to have a list of things I have read in, say, the last year. I’d also like a proper place to put the book recommendations I jot down all the time. And bonus points for pulling this info in automatically from Amazon (I buy everything on Kindle these days), or maybe by processing my forwarded Amazon e-mail receipts, TripIt-style.
To be fair, this is a v1.0 release and it looks great: slick and easy to use, and with iCloud so you can share easily between all your different iPhone models (there’s no iPad app yet). And you lost nothing by trying it out.
