Apple has just unveiled iTunes Rewind 2009, a feature on the iTunes Store that lists all of the year’s best selling content, across music, video and apps. For some, the feature will be confirmation of the intractable cretinism of that mouth-breathing biomass, mankind. For others, it will be a handy primer on popular media they might have missed this year. Let’s dive in!

In Music, the top selling single of 2009 was “Boom Boom Pow” by the Black Eyed Peas (the video of which ironically and prominently features a decidedly non-Apple machine, in the HP Touchsmart), followed by Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” (a song which prominently features a lyric — “bluffin’ with my muffin” — quite clearly paraphrased from the poetry of Emily Dickinson). Meanwhile, the Kings of Leon’s “Only By The Night” got the nod for best-selling album of the year, with Lilly Allen’s “It’s Not Me, It’s You” and Lady GaGa’s “The Fame” being the second and third best selling albums, respectively.

Film snobs who like to contemptuously curl their lips at box office numbers will have a lot of food for thought in iTunes Rewind’s list of best-selling movies of 2009. Twilight came in first, with Pineapple Express in second place and Quantum of Solace. J.J. Abrams’ fun cinematic drinking game, Star Trek (rules: drink when you see a lens flare) came in fifth. Personally, I’m surprised that the best-selling films in the iTunes store this year weren’t a lot worse.

Finally, in the App Store, the top selling games of 2009 are all fairly predictable mainstream titles: The Sims 3, Oregon Trail, Need for Speed Underground, and Madden NFL 10. Interestingly, only one of those games wasn’t published by EA.

Depending on which country you’re located in, Apple’s iTunes Rewind results will be different, so check out your local listings in order to gauge yourself with that of the maddening crowd of iTunes Store users. To iTunes with thee!
